  Screw cutting Acme Thread - Brake rod (Part 1). Welcome to this month’s traction engine build update. With the weather not helping motivation, I decided to tackle some straightforward lathe work — the brake rod. The drawing specifies a 3/8" × 10 TPI left-hand square thread. While anticlockwise operation to apply the brake would justify a left-hand thread (as seen on some full-size engines such as those by Aveling & Porter and Burrell ), cutting an internal LH square thread at this size would be challenging. A right-hand thread will be perfectly adequate for the model. My plan is to screw cut a trial thread in silver steel, mill flutes to create a tap, harden it, and use it to thread the bronze nut. I’ll then cut the matching screw so both parts mesh correctly. Since the nut is bronze, machining should be manageable. Burrell Bearings. Finally Something Different

 Burrell Bearings. Finally Something Different.. This month as by way for a change from some of the other long term parts, I have made a start on the bearing material. This was a slab of cast Bronze from the foundry, and I have started the preliminary squaring up and cutting in half, to make 2 smaller manageable but identical pieces.  Following a study of the drawings, it also has meant the bearing housings have needed additional machining, as they were oversize for the bearings to fit. Essentially some small corrections are expected, and making parts fit each other correctly is a double check on the drawing accuracy as I'm going along. When both the housings are complete to a width of 1 inch internal size then the bearing shell work can continue. In other thinking - (and this is an odd side topic) - My Machines.
