Happy Birthday To Me Again !
Already February and 2 year 4 months since the start of the build!!.
Both the rear wheels are complete!.
< Left The spokes have been hand painted with corrosion-resistant red oxide paint, to prevent finger marks rusting up.
The differential parts have been started apart from the teeth a job I feel I might not be able to do on my machines, but looking to out source these. The ones available from Bridport Foundry at £250 are a last resort owing to the cost, and I already have the cheaper differential blank castings.
Also looking into replacing all the M3 bolts for dome head Allen key bolts for a better rivet look finish.
> Right finished bevel gear minus the teeth mounted on wheel ready for a decision on how to cut the teeth.
Just removed some surface rust from the diff and checks to see if it might fit on the faceplate and even on the 10 inch lathe.
Next few weeks a number of small jobs to do, and by way of getting back into the swing of things after the Christmas break include:-
1. Making the wheel retainer pins.
2. Making a dividing plate with 23 holes for the 69 tooth gear.
3. Machining the steel gearing holder to 3/4 for aligning the 69 tooth gear when complete.
Differential gear with boss, first machining process taking off the hard skin and surface rust, and boring the centre back to true. It was actually off centre by a bit, but the casting was not too hard inside unlike the outside edge.Right the firsts attempt of trying to cut the keyway in the 2nd shaft gear, with this setup I was only able to cut so far with the broach. The final solution short of buying a press just for one keyway I used a copper mallet. By this method and 2 hours of tapping was able to cut the complete keyway out. Not the most elegant solution but its done and fitment is perfect.
< (Left) One of my birthday presents in position a set of Stevenson precision blocks. An attempt to raise the dividing head up to clear the 2nd shaft 69 tooth gear. Not clamped down yet or set square but demonstrates I have a chance at trying to cut the teeth on the Centec 2A otherwise it could be an expensive part to put out and have done.
Until the next announcement update and work completed and justify another post
have fun in the Workshop - Stay Safe - Make Swarf.
Best regards.
Stephen.
