Burrell Traction Engine, 2022- Year 3 of the build
Well, here we are again, new variants are still a thing my back is still playing me up.
Just a quick update on the Burrell build.
The objective for this year, fingers crossed, is to complete the following items :-
- Complete the riveting of the chimney that I had rolled Christmas before last.
- Shorten the shaft tubes and complete the bearings.
- Install the Olite bearings that I ordered last year.
- Complete the horn plates all dunny rivets and bearings. (69T gear required)
Aside from making the engine this year I also looked at my equipment and tools. < Left I had printed a chuck wedge to aid stuck chucks.
<Below>
I also ended up investing in some Stevenson blocks, and have put them to good use already on the milling machine as a couple of raiser blocks for the dividing head.
This is to try to cut the 69 Tooth gear for the 2nd shaft, with this complete and using one of the previously cut gears I can check and make a start on the centre's and bearings in the horn-plates.
More photo's to follow on this progress as cutting teeth is very slow.
2nd Shaft Gear continued.....
New year and finally bit the bullet and started gear cutting. The setup decided and following many clamps and extra support from both an angle plate and machine vice to offer a bit more rigidity. The first tooth gap has been machined to part depth, it all sounded smooth and as it is cast iron its soft enough not to trouble the cutter. The index plate needs indexing 20 holes each time so I should be able to knock out about 4 teeth per night so 2 months and it should be done. Its lucky I'm not working on piece work with this! Also one of my Monday's is Valentines night!!.
These teeth are only cut to partial depth a final cut of 0.056" is required to complete.
