Stoke Prior Steam Show
Sat 16th - Sun 17th Sep 2023
The show as usual was well attended, and I'm happy to report the paying numbers looked good despite the 10% suggestion of rain from Alexa on Saturday, and Sunday being showers all day. This is in contrast to last year, when we got sun burnt. 😎
The show boasted 737 individual exhibits which included 26 miniatures, and 6 full size engines, along with a huge number of commercials, cars, bikes, military vehicles and stationary engine displays. This time unlike last year also had a miniature railway, which was fascinating to watch, as long as you could keep the coal ash out of your eyes :-)
I attended Saturday with the classic car a Jensen Healey 1973, but was lucky enough to get a drive on a friends 4" scale Foster Traction engine. This was the highlight of the day for me, as its the first time driving a miniature. I have previously only driven a full size Fowler Road Locomotive 'Western Star' No: 12899.
<--- When they get to 6" to the foot and compound, the machine is bordering on full size weight (2.8 Tonnes) and cost. I'm only jealous as the one I'm building is a 3" Burrell and a single cylinder.
Below right 4" Garratt Tractor acquired last year, First year of rallying. ------>
All in all a great show, and with new additions each year defiantly a show worth a visit. I can almost say, its only 2nd to the big show at Welland (Upton on Severn).
The only complaint I can think of is, the PA system is a bit quiet, depending on where you stand around the arena. But that's no real hardship, and with the number of Miniatures and variety, coupled with the friendly people, and relaxed atmosphere.
Makes this a great show and I'm already looking forward to next year!
The new items a 7-1/4" gauge railway, and the wall of death, I've not seen before at any other show.
The Fox family have been touring and entertaining the public since the 1920’s. With their vintage Indian Scout motorcycles and their 20ft high vertical wall this is a show that needs to be seen to be believed!
- Next month back to the Burrell and the progress on the main bearings.
Generally I post blog updates at the beginning and end of each month, depending on workshop progress or show content. Next event will be the Midlands Model Engineers 2023 Exhibition, at the Fosse way for people that know it.
Until next month stay safe; make swarf; have fun!
